Pedagogy of Photography Exhibit at NYU

In collaboration with an amazing nonprofit World Savvy, Pedagogy of Photography (POP) students had the opportunity to exhibit their photographic installation piece regarding immigration and identity, "Doors of Reflection", at NYU as part of the Global Youth Media Arts Festival. POP students were proud to be one of the few groups selected to present at World Savvy's Fundraiser. The layers of POP students' identities combined with the journey of their migration paths moved many viewers.

“Doors of Reflection is a visual journey through the lives of us middle school students in the Bronx. This piece combines words with images to reveal our personal interpretations of the world and where we stand in it. This art serves to teach others how we got to where we are now and discuss the road that we’ve traveled to get here. These doors are reflections, mirrors, you can see yourself, us, inside, and yea that is true when you stand at a door and reach for the knob you think about where your going and when you’re on the other side you think about where you have been.
What you will discover from the work that we did, the time it took to work towards this piece of art, the creativity that was in our minds waiting to be unleashed again is just a part of our whole story. Part of getting this piece to where it is now was by taking images, in our homes, talking about our nationality, foods, cultures, the hardships of moving, what good things come out of the “bad”, how all that we’ve experience help us make choices, the decisions we faced along the way, the rules we had to break to be where we are today. Now we reflect upon it, it had been put visually in our hand’s reach, now you get to experience this through our Doors of Reflection.” Written by Pedagogy of Photography Student Vivia Thompson
